The Packwood Trail Project is a registered 501c3 organization dedicated to working with our community and local land managers to build and maintain a network of trails in the area surrounding Packwood, WA.
Trails with relatively little elevation gain or loss and that are sloped between 0 and 10 percent would decrease the difficulty of walking, running, and riding the trails in both directions.
Trails below the elevation of 2500 feet, mostly between 1,300 and 1,800 feet would render the trails snowfree for most of the year and provide recreational trail opportunities where there are none now.
Placing well-defined trailheads at existing paved roads would increase ease of access, maintenance capabilities, and provide well delineated access points.
Because of the ease of access, we anticipate these trails will be moderate to high use where hiking and biking are the primary uses. To minimize conflicts, use types may be segregated or flow patterns (up/down) recommended. Some equestrian opportunities are possible tying into existing US Forest Service trails.
Certainly a multi-year effort, the Packwood Trail Project is engaging with community partners and land managers to determine trail objectives. Trail construction may only begin after we submit a proposal, it is evaluated by the US Forest Service, and sufficient funding is procured to ensure the project can be completed and maintained.
We are developing partnerships for a sustainable trail network with the US Forest Service, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, Washington Trails Association, local business, landowners, and other entities.
We are building consensus and buy-in by listening to both the community's sensitivities and land manager's concerns alike. We are developing a sustainable strategy for funding both development and long-term maintenance.
We are hitting the woods hard and recording our observations. We anticipate we will need to be flexible with the trail layout to protect threatened and endangered species, aquatic ecosystems, and archeological resources.
These types of efforts take years to accomplish. Solid plans take community input and time to develop. Environmental policies and processes need to be addressed. Grants, donations, and programs run on cyclic timelines. In 2019, we aim to submit our first proposals to the Forest Service.
Donations are important to keep our organization alive, they:
